Use incense Plant the incense stick somewhere it will stand firmly, such as a bowl of rice or soil or use an incense holder. Light the tip of the stick with a match or lighter and wait until it lights up. You can let it burn for about 10 seconds and the flame will probably go out by itself, if not: gently blow it out. If the ember continues to glow red, then you know the incense is burning. If it turns gray, turn it back on. The smell comes almost immediately along with the smoke. It is safest to burn the incense in a specially designed incense holder.
